Honda To Hike Car Prices

Posted by Admin | Saturday, November 29, 2008 | | Comments

honda-cr-v.jpg
Honda is set to hike car prices across models by Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh from January next year to factor in increased production cost due to depreciation of the rupee and expensive raw materials.

“Many of the parts are imported and the rupee’s depreciation has made them expensive . Thus, we will be revising car prices with effect from the first week of January,” Jnaneswar Sen, marketing vice-president for Honda Siel Cars said.
The highest impact would be on the sports-utility vehicle CR-V, which is imported to India as a completely-built unit (CBU). While price of the luxury sedan Accord will go up by Rs 30,000-50 ,000, Civic will likely to be dearer by Rs 10,000-20 ,000. For the moment the price of City wont be hiked as its new model and has just been launched. Honda has received 5,000 bookings so far,

The imported content in the Accord is about 75% and in Civic about 22%. The new City has about 26% imported parts. The current price of CR-V variants is between Rs 17.7-19 .9 lakh, the Accord between Rs 16.9-17 .7 lakh and the Civic between Rs 11-12 .8 lakh (all ex-showroom Delhi). The rupee has been weakening against the dollar for months and crossed Rs 50 last week. “The cost of imports from Japan alone has gone up by 30-35 % in the last around three months,” Sen said.

Ambassador Sales Down

HM Ambassador.JPG
The economic turmoil has cast its spell on country's oldest automobile company Hindustan Motors, with sales of Ambassador cars dipping by more than 33 per cent in the past few months.

A company official told reporters that Amby sales which were in the region of 900 cars per month have come down to 600 units now. "The situation is not very good," the official added.

The official further said that though the company was not thinking of any move like a temporary shutdown of the plant for the moment some ways would have to be found to combat the crisis if the situation continued for long.

He also dismissed any chance of slashing prices, saying HM would not go for any price cut to boost sales of Amby. The company manufactures Amby at the Uttarpara plant in West Bengal.

Opel Insignia Car of the Year 2009

Posted by Admin | Sunday, November 23, 2008 | | Comments

Opel Insignia Car of the Year 2009
For the first time in 22 years, a General Motors vehicle has been voted ‘Car of the Year’ (COTY) in Europe. The brand-new Opel insignia gathered a total of 321 points beating the second Ford Fiesta by the narrowest possible margin - a solitary point.

The Insignia is the third Opel / Vauxhall model to be awarded with the COTY after the Kadett (Vauxhall Astra in the UK) scooped the award in 1985 with the Omega (Vauxhall Carlton) following in 1987. The COTY jury, which is made up of 59 senior motoring journalists from 23 European countries gave the VW Golf VI a total of 223 points placing it third of the contest’s seven finalists.

“This is the closest COTY competition for years,” comments Ray Hutton, president of the 59-strong jury of senior motoring journalists. “Car of the Year has often been decided narrowly, but it is eight years since another Ford, the Mondeo, was beaten by a single point by Alfa Romeo’s 147.” To underscore the closeness of the 46-year-old competition, the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia received most votes from 20 of the international jurors, while the Fiesta was placed first by 19 of them.

Points allotted by journalists to the other COTY finalists were Citroen C5 198, Alfa Romeo MiTo 148, Skoda Superb 144 and Renault Megane 121 points.

For the record, the competition’s first stage was in October, when jurors chose seven finalists from a total of 37 contenders. In order to be eligible for COTY, a car must be launched within the past 12 months and has to be available in at least five European countries - which is why the Toyota iQ didn’t take part in this year’s competition as European sales start in January 2009.

Bajaj Pulsar 220 Upgrade

bajaj-pulsar-220-upgrade.jpg
Bajaj plans to upgrade the Pulsar 220 cosmetically by giving it the black theme. The Pulsar 180 & 200 already have the black theme and we wonder why Bajaj launched the Pulsar 220 without black wheels. Actually we know why Bajaj did not launch the Pulsar 220 with black wheels, simply because they would want to do this later. I think Bajaj is feeling the heat from Yamaha.

The Black themed Pulsar 220 should be launched along with the upgraded Pulsar 200. Bajaj plans to launch the Pulsar 200 with FI which would give the Pulsar 200 a competitive edge against the Yamaha FZ16.

Ford To Phase Out Fusion

Posted by Admin | Tuesday, November 18, 2008 | | Comments

Ford Fusion.jpg
Ford India plans to discontinue the Fusion. The Fusion really never took off and has had poor sales. When it was launched in 2004, expensive hatch backs really didn't sell. Ford did resort to many price cuts to push the car, even trimming it under 4 meters in order to get excise benefits. But all that in vain because it really didn't as much as Ford thought it would.

“We will eventually phase it out due to poor sales,” Michael Boneham, president and MD of Ford India said.
We thought the lack of diesel engine was the reason for the Fusion not to sell, but then Ford introduced the fantatic Fiesta Duratorq engine. The diesel engine really didn't fire the sales. One of the reasons for the Fusion to be a slow moving car out of Ford's stockyard was the high pricing and bland styling.

Honda Sells 98 Civic Hybrids In A Day

Posted by Admin | Sunday, November 16, 2008 | | Comments

Honda Civic Hybird.JPG
Honda has sold 98 Civic Hybrid cars on a single day on Thursday, much more than what it managed in the entire five months since the premium hybrid’s launch in India, thanks to a reduced pricing by a whopping Rs 8 lakh, or 40%. Honda maintains this price to be a limited-period offer.

With Thursday’s orders, Honda has sold out the first batch of Civic Hybrids it had imported from Japan. The second batch is already on its way. “A big consignment of these cars will be reaching India in the next few days. We will also take more orders as per the demand from our dealers,” the Honda spokesperson said.

“Customers are extremely attracted by the high-fuel efficiency of the hybrid,” said a Delhi-based Honda dealer, who clocked a dozen bookings for the car on Thursday. With electric motor support, Civic Hybrid delivers an average of 20 km per litre of petrol. Also, the hybrid system comes with a lifetime warranty.
Civic Hybrid, at its new price of Rs. 13.36 lakh, is just Rs. 50,000 costlier then top V variant at Rs. 12.86 lakh. The price parity has led to increase in demand for the hugely fuel-efficient hybrid in metros like Mumbai and Delhi, and fuel-sensitive areas like Punjab and Hyderabad.

New Ford Ikon Launched

Posted by Admin | Friday, November 07, 2008 | | Comments

new-ford-ikon.jpg
Ford India has finally launched the new Ikon. We had posted earlier this year in March about Ford’s plan to launch the diesel Ikon. The new Ford Ikon is not only sporting a slightly spruced up look but has the Duratorq diesel engine which does duty in the diesel Fiesta and Fusion.

The new Ikon also boasts a freshened exterior design. The hood now has a sharper design and striking new headlamps along with an all new front bumper and larger lower grille.

new-ford-ikon-interior.jpg
The new Ikon comes with dual-tone beige interiors. The instrument cluster on the diesel variant incorporates new graphics, tachometer, LED needles and LCD odometer display.

The 1.4-litre Duratorq engine and 5 speed gearbox is developed jointly by Ford with Peugeot for a range of cars. The fantastic Duratorq oil burner has 68PS of power @ 4000rpm and 160NM of torque @ 2000rpm. The engine is light and this helps in better handling. The new sub-frame mounting for the engine-transmission assembly has helped in reducing the NVH. The steering and suspension have been retuned the to suit the diesel engine.

The Ikon weighs lesser then the Fiesta and thus should perform better in the Ikon. The Ikon diesel should give good fuel efficiency which was not the case with the petrol variant.

The new Ford Ikon comes with a two-year/100,000km warranty and is available in 7 colours - Diamond White, Panther Black, Moondust Silver, Paprika Red, Platinum, Brush Steel and a new colour Morello. The new Ikon is priced Rs. 4.59 Lakhs for the petrol and Rs. 5.19 Lakhs for the Diesel, Ex-Showroom, Delhi.

Toyota To Make $5000 Car

Posted by Admin | Saturday, November 01, 2008 | | Comments

Daihatsu Sonica.jpgToyota Motor Corp and its mini vehicle unit Daihatsu Motor Co are developing a new car for India that will likely sell for around $5,000 (Rs. 2.5 lacs).

Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, has lagged rivals in the race to win over India's cost-conscious consumers - a battle that promises to heat up in earnest with Tata Motors scheduled to launch its $2,500 Nano car soon. A venture of India's Bajaj Auto Ltd with Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co plans a similar car, while Hyundai Motor Co and General Motors Corp are also studying an ultra-low-cost vehicle.

Toyota has so far only disclosed plans for what it calls an "entry family car", which is scheduled to be produced in India and Brazil from 2010 and 2011, respectively. That car is expected to cost around $8,000, although Toyota has not officially mentioned a price. The Asahi said Toyota will likely build the $5,000 car in India, with sales also possible in Brazil. Toyota executives have so far denied any interest in developing an ultra-low-cost car, arguing that selling such a car under the Toyota badge could hurt its brand image.
