Car Maintenance: Properly Waxing A Vehicle

One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of car maintenance is the proper waxing of the vehicle. It is always disconcerting to see drivers spending an entire afternoon washing and cleaning their pride and joy, to then walk away from the vehicle having not given it a final protective coating.

Not only does properly waxing a vehicle give is a luxurious and shiny finish, it also seals the “pores” of the car, which can help to protect it against water vapour, dust, dirt, rust and the general strains of the elements.

It is simple to check whether or not a car is in need of a thorough waxing: if the water does not bead off the surface of the vehicle when it is sprayed with water, or when it is raining, then the car should be waxed. A car should ideally be waxed properly at least twice over the course of a year, as this will help to keep it looking it its prime condition, as well as helping it to maintain its value, should you ever want to sell it.

In order to avoid inadvertently scratching the surface of the car, it is vital to wash it thoroughly before attempting to wax it – this must always be done beforehand, no matter how clean the car looks!

Unless there is specific direction from the car's manufacturer, there are a variety of waxes to choose from, so it pays to know the benefits of each.

Liquid waxes – these are quick and easy to use, however, they do not last as long as hard or soft waxes.

Soft waxes – these are easy to apply and remove, although they can contain a mild cleaning solution.

Hard and paste waxes – these require a little more work to apply that the aforementioned waxes, however, they will typically yield the most impressive, long lasting and professional looking results.
