India’s presence in the motoring world continues to grow. Last year, Tata was classified as one of India’s most valuable brands by The Economic Times as it generated revenue of $20 billion. The company is continuing to grow and India’s increasing presence in motor racing will only help cement its position as one of the fastest growing motoring nations in the world.

The drivers
Formula One is a huge global sport, with an audience of over 500 million people worldwide. However, like it or not the drivers are the biggest stars of the show, which is why men like Nigel Mansell can make money from their association to the sport in Moneysupermarket car insurance advertisements fifteen years after their retirement. This is why Vijay Mallya has made it his target to produce India’s first F1 World Champion.

The first Indian driver in F1 was Narain Karthikeyan who drove for the Jordan Toyota team in 2005 with backing from Tata. The team was on its last legs before a takeover by Russian firm Midland, which resulted in a lack of testing time for its rookie drivers and an under developed car. Nevertheless, Karthikeyan started the season strongly and impressed many people with some of his performances particularly at Imola where Karthikeyan punched above his weight and challenged the midfield teams. He also took advantage of problems for teams with Michelin tyres to become the first and so far only Indian driver to score points in F1 by finishing a remarkable fourth in the American grand prix of that season. Despite this, Karthikeyan grew tired of the underperforming outfit and switched to Williams to become the teams test driver, where he was often on the pace of his rookie team-mate Nico Rosberg. However, another F1 opportunity has never reared appeared in the ultra competitive series and Karthikeyan instead switched his intention to the A1GP category where he won three races for the Indian team over two seasons.

F1 wouldn’t get another Indian driver until Karun Chandhok made his debut for backmarkers Hispania this year. The team was hideously underprepared for its debut in the sport, yet Chandhok still managed to finish 14th at the second round in Australia, which was enough to guarantee him 22nd in the drivers championship. This put him ahead of his more experienced Hispania team-mates Senna, Klein and Yamamoto. Chandhok’s part season with the squad impressed many of the sports big players including Lewis Hamilton and Bernie Ecclestone who said that Chandhok deserved a better team for 2011. He has yet to be confirmed but hopes are high with Chandhok believed to be in negotiations with four F1 teams, including Vijay Mallya’s Force India team which would create the ultimate Indian line-up in time for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix in 2011.

The Team
Vijay Mallya bought the old Jordan F1 team at the end of 2007 and turned it into Force India. He brought in the experienced race winning driver Giancarlo Fisichella to lead the team and partnered him with the promising young German Adrian Sutil. The team has improved steadily over the past three seasons to a point where Fisichella took the team’s first pole, podium and points at the Belgian grand prix in 2009. However, despite the success of the Belgian event the teams form in 2009 was inconsistent. This improved in 2010 with Luizzi partnering Sutil, as it became a regular point’s challenger and eventually finished seventh in the 2010 Constructors Championship.

Despite the loss of key technical members to Sauber and Lotus, hopes are high for 2011 when the team are hoping to capitalise on regulation changes to ensure they are on the podium in October’s Indian Grand Prix, possibly with Karun Chandhok at the wheel.

The circuit
New Delhi has been chosen as the destination for the first Indian F1 circuit. Despite rumours to the contrary the company behind the construction have confirmed that the circuit will be completed in time for October 2011, complete with a 200,000 person capacity. A number of F1 teams have been consulted about the circuit design, with many drivers having tried different versions in simulators. The end result will be a fast track which Mark Hughes (vice president of JPSI who are constructing the circuit) claims will prove to be a big challenge for all the drivers. It is believed that this venue will help ignite interest in F1 for more of the Indian population. This will help to attract more Indian companies to the sport which will inevitably improve the chance of Indian drivers being given seats in the sport (as they will have sponsors paying teams for the positions) and potentially help the financial situation of the Force India F1 team. Having Karun Chandhok behind the wheel of a Force India in 2011 will only improve the chances of this happening.

The Engine
F1 is set for a massive regulation overhaul in time for the 2013 season. Part of this will be new engine regulations designed to reduce fuel consumption and therefore promote environmentally friendly motoring. It is rumoured that this will see engine sizes reduce from 2.4 litre V8’s to 1.6 litre Turbo engines. The fact that costs will be reduced and that engine manufacturers currently in the sport will lose the advantage of experience will open the door to new entrants. Porsche has already expressed an interest in a return, while Malaysia’s Proton car company is looking to enter early by buying into the Renault F1 team. If these two companies can afford to enter, there is no reason why TATA can’t enter as well. We could then be set for a much greater Indian involvement of having an Indian driver (Karun Chandhok), an Indian team (Force India) and an Indian car manufacturer (Tata) involved in the sport in time for the Indian Grand Prix of 2013.

The effect on India’s motor industry
Britain used to be one of the biggest motoring industries in the world during the 1950s. This coincided with the start of the F1 championship which cemented Britain’s position as a big player in the sport as it resulted in a number of British teams and drivers. Italy, Germany, Japan and Spain have all had similar experiences over the years, and each time this has resulted in an increased viewing audience in their home nations due to the increased interest regarding how well their teams and drivers are doing. The same will likely happen in India when Force India and Karun Chandhok start challenging at the front of the field in the near future. This will also likely make the outside world realise that the Indian motor industry is technologically advanced and should result in increased world wide sales as happened with Honda and Japan in the 1980s. Indians motoring industry is set to become one of India’s prized assets and one to be proud of.

New BMW 5 Series passes first crash test using brake intervention

Munich. Up until now, verification of vehicle safety has been obtained by means of crash tests in which structural integrity and restraint systems were tested in a non-braked situation. However, thanks to modern electronics such as those also featured in the new BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series, protective systems that warn the driver in advance of an accident and prepare the driver and the vehicle for impact in the event of an unavoidable collision, are becoming more and more widely accepted.

Future testing procedures will have to make allowances for the effect of preventive protection systems. In a recent world premiere, the BMW 530d successfully passed a crash test involving brake intervention at the facility of the Deutscher Kraftfahrzeug-Überwachungs-Verein (DEKRA) in Neumünster near Hamburg.

Every motorist is familiar with the situation: The end of a tailback suddenly appears behind a motorway bend. If a motorist is inattentive or visibility is impaired, a rear-end collision is imminent. after all, this is the cause of around 40 percent of all motorway accidents involving injured persons.

In order to defuse this kind of hazardous situation, some premium segment vehicles such as the BMW 5 Series are already equipped with anticipatory assistance systems that help reduce the risk of such accidents. BMW's successful upper mid-range model, which was just recently brought to market, features – combined with Active Cruise Control – an optional rear-end collision warning system incorporating a braking function that activates an alarm scenario in two stages.

In situations demanding particularly rapid intervention by the driver, the system activates an acoustic signal in addition to the visual warning. Should the driver still not react to the request to apply the brakes, a time-limited delay procedure is activated: The car brakes for 1.2 seconds with reduced deceleration, whereby speed is already reduced before the driver can apply the pre-tensioned brakes.

Based on the information supplied by the radar sensor of the Active Cruise Control system (ACC Stop &Go) featured in the new BMW 5 Series, the system detects when a collision can no longer be avoided by the driver's reaction. In this case, an automatically activated emergency brake application function ensures that collision speed is, nevertheless, significantly reduced.

Based on a conventional EuroNCAP test with the car approaching an offset obstacle at 64 km/h, a so-called offset crash, the vehicle used in the DEKRA test incorporating advanced brake intervention likewise initially accelerated to 64 km/h. However, immediately before impact the BMW 530d braked hard – as stipulated by the system – and collided with the offset block at a reduced speed of just 40 km/h.

Due to full brake application immediately prior to impact and the car's pitching movement resulting from this, the vehicle changes its position, particularly when the front bumper hits the block. The vehicle collides with the obstacle in a slightly "lower" position than in the case of a crash occurring without prior application of the brakes.

Concerning the deceleration, occupants also assume a position further forward. More important, however: In the event of a crash incorporating prior brake application, the severity of impact is reduced considerably, thereby significantly lessening the strain on all occupants.

Previous testing facilities have not permitted verification of the effect of anticipatory occupant protection systems in crash tests. Maruti Suzuki India Limited has marginally increaseed the prices of its models, excluding recently launched Eeco, Swift (Petrol) and Gypsy models. The price increase is to partly recover the increase in the input costs arising out of raw material costs over the past one year. For some models the increase in the costs are being absorbed by the company, in the light of market situation.

The price increase varies from 0.12 per cent (Ritz VDi) to 1.90 per cent (Dzire LXi). For the affected models, the average increase in prices is around 0.6 percent. The Tata Nano has won the prestigious Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) award. In its fifth year running and modeled along the lines of the American, European and Japanese Car of the Year, the ICOTY award and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) award have been instituted by leading automotive magazines in India, in association with JK Tyre, to bring the auto industry in India at par internationally in recognising their efforts. After the jury rounds the Tata Nano emerged as the Indian Car of the Year.

The awards are an expert and independent judgment of all new cars and motorcycles launched in the calendar year in India. An 11-member specialist jury consisting of senior automobile journalists from leading automobile magazines in India got together to vote for the most impressive car and motorcycle on similar parameters to acclaimed international awards for automotive excellence.

This time there was a close contest for the ICOTY award and after all points were tabulated, it was the Tata Nano with 63 points that emerged the victor. Though several vehicles qualified for the 2010 ICOTY, the ten finalists selected by the jury, besides the Tata Nano, were the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Jazz, Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Mahindra Xylo, Skoda Superb, Tata Indigo Manza, and Toyota Fortuner.

Riding on the success of its “Green car” label in European markets, the A-star, Maruti Suzuki’s flagship world strategic model for global markets, crossed export mark of 1 lakh units, with the shipment from Mundra Port, today.The company has achieved 1 lakh units cumulative export of A-star in less than a year since its first shipment to Europe in January this year. Suzuki’s fifth world strategic model, A-star was launched in India in November 2008. Manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant, India is the sole base for production of this flagship export model of Suzuki, Japan. The car is being exported to 69 countries.

Europe has emerged as the major export destination for A-star, where the car is sold as Suzuki Alto. Maruti Suzuki has exported 93,562 units of A-star to Europe alone. Currently, A-star sells in 19 countries in Europe. UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France are some of the major markets. With the next generation K-series engine, the A-star has been rated as number one environmental friendly petrol car in Germany. The European version of A-star sports a Euro V compliant engine that emits CO2 as low as 103 gms per kilometer.

Other major markets for A-star, where it is sold as Suzuki Celerio include Chile, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria and UAE. Like European countries, the car is sold as Suzuki Alto in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand markets. In the first phase of A-star export plan, Maruti Suzuki has already covered many key markets in Western Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. 60000 Tata Nanos To Be On Road By July 2010

Tata Motors will deliver up to 60,000 units of the Nano by July, 2010 while remaining committed to handing over the first one lakh cars by next year once its mother plant in Sanand goes live. The new plant in Sanand is likely to be ready by the end of this financial year.

The Nano is currently being manufactured at Tata Motors' Pantnagar facility, which has an annual capacity of 50,000 units. Once the upcoming Sanand facility comes into action the first 1,00,000 deliveries will be done in October-December 2010.

Volvo To Launch S60 In 2010
